What can you do with a Theology Degree?


Theology, a subject that talks about how humans experience faith towards God and what exactly is God about. One could say that the study of theology is partly philosophical, historical and anthropological. Studying theology would require you to take on challenging questions regarding the meaning of religion. Students usually take up theology in preparation to provide service to the church, but it is not completely necessary to be religious to take part in this course. Now that we’ve established what is theology, we shall now talk about what a theology degree can offer.
A theology degree helps students to fulfill their calling towards providing services to the church as a minister, a pastor or a youth worker. But that’s not all a theology degree holder is limited to. Many theology graduates pursue a career in journalism, politics, finance, civil services, etc. due to the skill like critical thinking, clear writing, problem-solving, and analyzing social and historical trends which are cultivated within them while they pursue this degree.

Colleges also offer an online divinity degree in which students’ study about Christian and other theologies. These online courses have helped many students pursue their degree who aren’t able to attend regular university/college. Now that we’ve spoken about what theology is and what value does a theology graduate hold, we shall now list the jobs a theology degree holder can opt for.
  • Religious Jobs: A student of theology will most obviously choose to pursue a job in theology. A degree in theology can help people become: Ministers, Pastors, Missionaries, Theology or religion professors, clergy member or a teacher at a religious school.
  • Secular Jobs: Careers open to students of theology are not just related to religious ones. Students can pursue secular jobs like Teachers, Social Workers, Ethicists, Non-Profit workers, Councilors, Journalists, Writers, and Historians. All of these careers need the sort of writing and critical analysis that theology can teach.
  • International Jobs: Students who are from a different country or aim to go abroad can pursue careers as Archeologists, Anthropologists, Non-Governmental Organizational workers, International Social Workers, and Diplomats
So now that we’ve categorized what a student of theology can do after he/she gets his/her degree we can reach to a common consensus that a degree in theology does not simply mean that you have to have a career as a minister or pastor, the spectrum is much larger.
Studying Theology also doesn’t mean that you’ll be only reading about religion all the time. The course makes students think and debate the nature of God. It also helps to compare different religions in a knowledgeable and balanced way. To conclude the opportunities, a theology degree offers you are plenty and are not limited in any sort of way. Being religious is not a compulsion and getting jobs that don’t have religious influence is a possibility.
